Buy the World a Coke
When advertiser Bill Backer was stuck in an airport after a delay, he looked around and saw travelers from all over enjoying a Coke. He wrote on a napkin, "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" and the idea was born. Taking a jingle Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway had written called "True Love and Apple Pie," they reworked it into a radio jingle first performed by The New Seekers. McCann Erickson then created The Hillside Singers to perform the commercial with a multicultural cast and a message of love and hope. The song was so popular that it was recreated as a full length song for commercial release getting its own album and Christmas record.
